  • Range of Services: We chose clinics that provide a comprehensive range of sexual health services, including testing, treatment, and consultations. Preventive care is also a plus.

How much do sexual health services cost in London?

Sexual health services in London are free when done in NHS-subsidized hospitals. Consultations at private clinics, though, will cost anywhere from £50 to £150. The final cost will depend on the clinic and the specific treatment you’ll need.

56 Dean Street Sexual Health Clinic is a unique place in London’s sexual health scene, especially with its focus on the LGBTQ+ community. After visiting the clinic, our team felt like the clinic was really a part of the community.

They have specialised services for LGBTQ+ individuals. One of their standout service TransPlus, which is the UK’s first combined NHS service for gender dysphoria and sexual health.

They also cover a lot of ground when it comes to sexual health, like sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and treatment, as well as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention.

We spoke with one of their patients living with HIV, who shared how much the peer support program helped him. He mentioned that the clinic provided immediate treatment after his diagnosis.

We also appreciate the dedicated support the clinic offers for those involved in Chemsex. They have a program to help people with the health issues that can come with drug use in sexual situations. It’s a unique service that shows their commitment to specific community needs.

However, it’s worth noting that while they offer a wide range of sexual health services, they don’t cover everything. For routine contraception, they direct patients to other clinics, which can be a bit inconvenient if you’re looking for a one-stop shop for all your sexual health needs.

Pros

  • Community-focused
  • Immediate treatment
  • Innovative care models
  • Chemsex support
  • Great peer support

Cons

  • Limited contraceptive services

Jefferiss Wing Sexual Health Clinic offers testing and treatment for STIs, as well as specialised care for HIV and human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV).

We had an appointment booked, but we found out they also offer emergency walk-in services for post-exposure HIV treatment or emergency contraception.

One of the things we liked about Jefferiss Wing is how inclusive and accessible it is. They have specific services for people under 25, with designated hours for them to get what they need.

Those who experience sexual assault can also get immediate care at the clinic without having to go to a different place.

There was a pretty long wait even though we had an appointment. We even heard some patients had to wait up to six weeks for appointment letters after being referred by their GP.

However, the staff was really friendly and compassionate. Many of the patients also said they felt comfortable and safe during their visit.

Pros

  • Comprehensive services
  • Emergency walk-ins
  • Inclusive and accessible
  • Immediate care for sexual assault victims
  • Friendly and compassionate staff

Cons

  • Long wait times

My privacy and dignity were respected

“Phoned to make an appointment. Was offered one for the next day at a time that was convenient. Arrived early. Was seen early. No waiting. All the staff were wonderful. My privacy and dignity were respected. They listened and made sure I understood what they were telling me. Couldn’t ask for a better service. Thank you, everyone!”

Best experience I’ve had with a medical professional in a very long time

“Best experience I’ve had with a medical professional in a very long time. Doctor Alton was very welcoming and explained everything in great detail and made me feel at ease. He was very accommodating of extra needs I had during my appointment. Very pleased with the service and it’s so nice to know that there are still medical professionals who attend patients with a smile and take time to listen, as opposed to wanting to rush them out of the door. Very happy.”

80 Leadenhall Street is a solid option if you’re looking for a wide range of sexual health services since they’re part of the Homerton University Hospital network.

When we visited, they mentioned offering everything from STI testing and treatment to various contraceptive methods. They also provide free condoms and emergency contraception.

If you need HIV services, they’ve got you covered with full support.  This includes testing, treatment, and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for those at risk.

However, some patients have mentioned that accessing their services can be tricky. There have been reports of delays beyond scheduled appointments, which can be frustrating if you need timely care.

For those who like to plan ahead, they offer online appointments. They also offer specific slots for PrEP (HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis), which makes ongoing HIV prevention easy.

We also appreciate that they welcome people of all genders and sexual orientations. They also run special programs like Project Community, which offers tailored support to local residents from Black and other ethnic minority communities.

Additionally, we can’t help but praise the additional support services they offer. They have health advisers available for psychological support and counselling, which can greatly help those dealing with sexual health issues.

Pros

  • Comprehensive services
  • HIV support
  • Offers online appointments
  • Inclusive to all gender
  • Offers special programs for minorities

Cons

  • A few reports about delayed scheduled appointments

Highly recommend this clinic!

“Highly recommend this clinic! It was clean, I was seen on time. I made the appointment the day before over the phone and it was super easy compared to the clinic near where I live where I can never get an appointment. I saw Joely who was lovely and calming and made me feel at ease. She was informative as well.”

So far, I have had only good experience with this clinic

“So far, I have had only good experience with this clinic. Most of the time, it’s impossible to get appointments for the day after in Central London clinics, but this one seems not to be so busy and helped me get assessed faster. Seems efficient and respectful. Hopefully, it will stay like this.”

What stood out to our team at 10 Hammersmith Broadway was the fast STI test results, thanks to their Cepheid GeneXpert® System. They get results in just hours, which helps patients get treated quickly and reduces the risk of spreading infections.

We were really impressed with the variety of sexual health services they offer. Their offerings include testing and treatment for STIs, emergency care for PEP, and family planning options like implants and coils.

A lot of their male patients also appreciate the specialised programs they have for men with complex sexual health needs.

Inclusivity is another strong point here. Their services for the transgender community are well-rounded and compassionate, which is a huge plus for us.

During our visit, the clinic’s relaxed, confidential atmosphere stood out. It’s clear they prioritise making patients feel safe and comfortable. The availability of same-day appointments and a convenient phone/text results service is another big plus.

That said, there’s room for improvement. A patient shared that routine contraception consultations require online booking, which could catch walk-in patients off guard. While not a major drawback, it’s worth noting for those unfamiliar with the system.

On a brighter note, the clinic goes above and beyond by supporting the community through safer sex education and vaccinations for at-risk individuals. It’s refreshing to see a healthcare provider so committed to public health.

Pros

  • Fast STI results
  • Comprehensive services
  • Specialised programs for men
  • Specialised services for the trans community
  • Comfortable environment
  • Strong community involvement

Cons

  • Online booking requirement for routine contraception consultation

They really have a real sense of care for their patients

“Cannot recommend highly enough personable and professional and a real sense of care for their patients! HUGE shoutout to the amazing nurse who fitted my coil, I didn’t catch her name but she was incredible”

I was taken well care of and had all the right questions and tests done

“This place other than being great (amazing facilities, great accessibility, amazing booking system – booked yesterday afternoon for this morning) have amazing staff. I was taken well care of and had all the right questions and tests done, even more than needed just to be on the safe side (and fast results!). I was going through a very tuff situation and had an emotional morning and Amy, my doctor, was great at calming my nerves and explaining everything that was happening and what to expect next. She reassured me and showed me empathy which was much appreciated. She is a great doctor and human being and I left feeling confident in what she recommended. Honestly such a good service from start to finish. Amy, I hope you’re reading this. Thank you for this morning!”

Booking an appointment was simple, but the option for walk-in for immediate care is a fantastic convenience. It’s clear they’re dedicated to providing accessible and flexible sexual health services.

We really felt their focus on inclusivity too. They have services for young adults and sex workers through programs like Open Doors, which offers confidential advice and support.

However, we heard from some of their patients that they felt rushed during their consultations.

I will be recommending this place to everyone I know

“Big thankyou to Joy and Dr Curnock, I really appreciated their guidance and support during my IUD replacement today. I originally only booked to have my IUD removed, but had a change of mind and they were able to squeeze me in last minute to fit a new one. Thanks again, will be recommending this place to everyone I know haha!”
