You know what they say – “health is wealth,” and when something feels off, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. If your doctor suggests an MRI, it’s probably because they want to get to the root of the issue and figure out what’s going on. The sooner you know, the better, right?

We’ve taken the time to check out a few MRI centres in Manchester to give you the lowdown. From speaking with patients to going in an undercover consultation, we’ve gathered the good, the bad, and everything you should know before going in for an MRI.

My team and I recently visited Medserena, and we really liked how open and spacious the place is compared to most MRI facilities. They also offered free refreshments and parking, which was a nice touch.

We were impressed by how quick the scans were—usually just around four minutes—so you’re not waiting around long. They also keep appointment waiting times short and get your medical reports to you quickly.

During our undercover consultation with them, we learned that they specialise in Upright Open MRI. This lets their patients sit or stand during the scan so they don’t feel stuck in a traditional machine. It also makes the whole experience a lot more relaxed.

Their technology also captures images in natural, weight-bearing positions. It’s great for spotting issues that might be missed in regular scans, like spinal problems.

Overall, their equipment seemed top-notch. However, we’ve heard complaints about unexpected extra charges for certain scans from other patients.

Pros

  • Spacious facility
  • Fast results
  • Comfortable experience
  • Advanced technology
  • Specialised services

Cons

  • A few reports of unexpected charges

I instantly felt calm and comfortable

“Arrived for my appointment an hour early because didn’t know what traffic would be like. Was offered tea and coffee and biscuits which was very kind. Went in for a scan and was warmly welcomed but a lady and a male assistant. Instantly felt calm and comfortable. The scan machine was brilliant, Sat in the chair and could watch TV all the time was checked on and told how much longer scan would take. Very very good experience.”

I can highly recommend them for your MRI scan

“I can highly recommend the open scanner at Medserena in Manchester I’ve had several scans in the enclosed scanner but much prefer the open version, the staff look after you throughout the scan keeping you updated with the running time of each scan. A big thank you for my recent visit”

We had to check out Nuffield Health Manchester Diagnostic Suite since it’s located in the Citylabs development, just a short walk from the city centre. It’s super easy to get there by public transport.

While we were there, we chatted with some of the staff. They told us they’ve got the latest Phillips MRI scanner with a wide-bore design. It’s perfect for anyone who gets claustrophobic during scans, making the whole experience much more comfortable.

A few patients we spoke to also mentioned how much they appreciated the calming lighting and the option to listen to music. It definitely helped them relax during the scan.

Another impressive aspect of Nuffield Health is how quickly they release the results. They’re usually ready within five days, which is way faster than most places.

Although they offer other services like CT scans, mammography, and ultrasound, a few patients mentioned that certain procedures or specialists weren’t always available immediately.

Pros

  • Convenient location
  • Advanced equipment
  • Relaxing environment
  • Quick results

Cons

  • A few reports about availability issues

Could not fault any part and would certainly recommend

“Travelled from North Wales.  Easy to find and car park directly opposite. I had been sent all the relevant instructions which made the experience much smoother.  The suite itself was immaculate and the staff were prompt polite and efficient.  Put me at ease immediately talking through each step of my scan. Could not fault any part and would certainly recommend”

The place is clean and tidy and pleasant to be seated in

“If you are walking here after free parking your car half a mile away, then observe these pictures to help you find reception. The bar on the corner, The Turing Tap, is what you need to head for along Oxford Road. From the doors to this bar it only takes around one minute to get to Nuffield Health Manchester Diagnostic Suite. The place is clean and tidy and pleasant to be seated in. Free hot drinks in the reception area.”

3. Manchester Royal Infirmary

Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI) uses a GE Signa HDX 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner. It’s impressive because it gives high-quality, detailed images without using ionising radiation. It’s actually a safer choice than CT scans.

During our visit, we were impressed by the variety of scans they offer. They do angiography for blood vessels, head and neck scans for neurological checks, and musculoskeletal imaging for bones and joints.

Some of the patients we talked to also appreciated the earplugs and headphones they were given. They really helped with the noise during scans.

Another strength is their prioritisation of urgent cases. One patient shared how his brother was scanned for cauda equina syndrome and metastatic cord compression within 12 and 24 hours, respectively.

Scans are usually done based on referrals from consultants, which ensures they’re medically necessary—a process that reassures both patients and professionals.

However, we noticed during our visit that the restrooms on certain wards didn’t quite match the number of patients, which could be uncomfortable for those staying longer.

Pros

  • High-quality scanning
  • Variety of services
  • Patient comfort
  • Consultant referrals
  • Urgent case prioritisation

Cons

  • Insufficient facilities

The reception staff very kind, and never stopped working

“This Hospital saved my life in January. I was admitted with a massive chest infection, collapsed left lung and pneumonia. All the staff on ward AM1, thank you for my life! At the MRI again on Sunday, all the staff were so kind and helpful. The reception staff very kind, and never stopped working. Thank you all.”

One of our researchers went for an undercover consultation at Spire Manchester Hospital. We learned that they use a 1.5T wide-bore MRI scanner, which is spacious and comfortable. It also features mood lighting, and patients can play their music to help ease anxiety during the scan.

The team communicated clearly, making sure our researcher knew exactly what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.

We were also impressed by their ability to produce both 2D and 3D images, which makes it easier to diagnose various conditions in the body, from bones to soft tissues to the brain.

Another plus is the quick access to MRI scans. Their patients told us they didn’t wait long, and their results came within a few days.

However, we have heard some complaints about their cancellation policy. One patient was frustrated about being charged for a consultation they couldn’t attend due to unavoidable circumstances.

Pros

  • Comfortable MRI experience
  • Clear communication
  • Advanced imaging technology
  • Quick access and results

Cons

  • Strict cancellation policy

The process was smooth, efficient, and conducted with a high level of professionalism

“I had an exceptional experience during my MRI scan. The process was smooth, efficient, and conducted with a high level of professionalism. The staff ensured that I was comfortable throughout, explaining each step clearly, which helped ease any concerns. The advanced imaging technology and the expertise of the technicians made the entire experience seamless. I was truly impressed by the care and precision involved. Highly recommend for anyone in need of MRI imaging services.”

One of the best things about Pall Mall – Medical & Cosmetics is how quickly you can get an appointment. A patient mentioned she used an easy online form to self-refer for an MRI and had her appointment in just a couple of days.

The place is also owned and run by doctors. This assured us that all the medical services, including MRI diagnostics, are overseen by qualified professionals.

When we visited, we learned that it’s not just an MRI centre – it’s a full-service private healthcare provider. You can book a specialist consultation or get a range of diagnostic services, including MRIs.

We were really impressed with their use of top-of-the-line technology with modern imaging equipment for MRIs, CT scans, and X-rays. This really helps with more accurate results and faster diagnoses.

That said, some patients have mentioned issues with appointment scheduling, specifically delays without being notified. One person said their 16:45 appointment was delayed until 17:00, and they didn’t get an explanation for the delay.

Pros

  • Quick access to services
  • Doctor-led care
  • Comprehensive healthcare
  • Modern technology

Cons

  • A few reports about scheduling issues

I can’t recommend Pall Mall enough

“I can’t recommend Pall Mall enough. I am new to the UK, and was in desperate need of help. Chelsie, the service development coordinator, went above and beyond to not only get me the help (appointments, communication with a doctor, prescriptions, etc.) but advocated for me as well. I had been unable to receive care through the NHS, and through my frustration of that process she listened to me, encouraged me and stayed in contact with me over the course of several weeks until everything was sorted. I highly recommend!”

Amy Ralls, Google review

Highly recommend!

“After being ill for almost 5 weeks doing test after test and getting fobbed off by my gp, I went to Pall Mall. The consultation with Dr Tang was really good because he listens to the patient and arranged the correct tests for my symptoms. The nurse who took my blood was really chatty and I barely felt it, he was brilliant! I feel better now I know we’re getting somewhere. Thank you so much! Highly recommend!”
