We decided to check out Digby Manor Care Home after hearing they won Best Residential Care Home in Birmingham in 2022. From the moment we walked in, it really felt more like a home than a typical care facility.
One of the standout features is the staff. A lot of them have been there for over ten years, which says a lot about the relationships they’ve built with the residents. This continuity is rare and definitely something we appreciate.
The place offers care for various needs, from those with dementia to those with physical disabilities.
We were also impressed with the variety of activities on offer, from arts and crafts to puzzles and daily walks. It’s clear they prioritize keeping residents active both mentally and physically.
Another highlight was the dining experience. The kitchen team ensures that different dietary needs are accommodated, which is important for everyone’s health.
We also liked the personal touch evident in the rooms. Residents can bring their own furniture if they like, and they can even bring well-behaved pets.
That said, some families mentioned they’d appreciate more transparency when it comes to care plans and decision-making. They didn’t disclose anything specific but it’s worth noting.

I never cease to be amazed by how well she is looked after
“My 94-year-old mother has been a resident here for approaching 2 years now. I never cease to be amazed by how well she is looked after by very professional and caring staff. She suffers from dementia but is always treated sensitively and appropriately by every one of the staff. I am incredibly relieved to know that I don’t have to worry about Mom, and I am also happy in the knowledge that she is perfectly happy and content. When we visited Church Rose Nursing Home, one thing that really stood out was the diversity. The residents, staff, and visitors all came from different cultural backgrounds. This created an environment that felt welcoming for everyone.
On the day we were there, a local charity was also visiting. It was nice to see how they’re always open to activities like this to keep residents entertained. It creates a lively and inclusive vibe.
We had a chance to chat with some of the residents, and they mentioned they really appreciate that there’s always something going on—like BBQs, parties, and cultural events.
The home specializes in dementia care. We were impressed by the tailored programs designed to support residents with cognitive challenges.
The rooms are all single-occupancy with en-suite facilities, so residents have both privacy and comfort. The place also offers extra touches like an on-site hairdresser, wellness therapies, and an activities program to support their well-being.
However, a few residents mentioned that some shared facilities are sometimes unclean.

Elliott House has staff trained in dementia care, so they can provide personalised support that respects each resident’s independence. This person-centred approach is a highlight for many residents we spoke to, who appreciated having care plans tailored to each of their preferences.
The facility itself is comfortable. It has well-decorated rooms and many with en-suite facilities. There are also several communal lounges, including a large orangery with views of the landscaped gardens, which adds to the pleasant atmosphere.
Elliott House also shines in its efforts to build community among residents. The variety of social activities and outings keeps everyone engaged and mentally active.
We particularly like that staff make an extra effort to introduce new residents to others, helping them settle in and feel included.
However, when we visited, we noticed that the staff seemed a bit stretched. It could have just been the day we were there, but it made us wonder if all residents’ needs are always met as effectively as they could be.

“My Dad has been a resident at Elliott House for 2 half years. We visited lots of homes but Elliott House was the one that stood out for us. It is lovely and clean and very well kept. The management staff are always there for you to give you help and support with your loved ones. The atmosphere is very friendly and welcoming and it’s the carers that stand out for us as they are so kind and caring to the residents with their individual needs, also the help and support they give each one. When my team and I visited Bournville Gardens Retirement Village, we were impressed by the sheer scale and variety the village offers. Home to over 300 residents, it has 228 homes ranging from one-bedroom apartments to three-bedroom cottages.
When we talked to some of the residents, they mentioned how much they enjoy all the social activities. There’s always something going on, like woodwork, gardening and even fitness classes.
One resident also shared that while the staff is always there to help, they do a great job of giving her the independence she wants. They also offer specialised care for things like dementia and mental health, which is a big plus.
The amenities are pretty impressive, too. There’s an indoor bowling green, a fitness suite, and more. Residents can also enjoy a greenhouse and hobby rooms, making it easy to stay active and involved.
However, some residents did mention issues with maintenance in the communal areas and individual apartments. They said that repairs don’t always get done quickly.

“I recently visited Bournville Gardens to meet family and friends. The facilities are truly wonderful. The reception atrium is spectacular and reminded me of a high-class holiday resort! The staff were very friendly and the food and drinks laid on for the event were very good. The gardens are beautiful with a greenhouse for residents to grow their own plants. I was amazed and a bit envious of the woodwork and metalwork workshop. Everybody seemed very relaxed and happy – this facility seems the ideal place to retire!”

5. Barchester – Edgbaston Beaumont Care Community

Barchester Edgbaston Beaumont Care Community might be worth considering if you’re looking for a place with a smaller, more close-knit community. With only 30 residents, the staff really takes the time to get to know each person and their needs.
The community offers different living options, including independent living apartments and traditional care. This way, people can live on their own but still have support when needed.
We looked around and were impressed by the facility itself. It’s a pleasant place with landscaped gardens, a café, and activity rooms. Accessibility is also clearly a priority, with wheelchair access, disabled facilities, and staff trained to handle various health needs.
We also liked that the community provides specialized care for conditions like stroke recovery and multiple sclerosis, offering peace of mind for families with specific concerns.
A few residents we spoke to, though, weren’t too happy with the meals. Some said they found many options unappetizing and often had to settle for simple dishes like omelettes and cheese on toast.
